steadfast surfacing

Spewing half-formed thoughts onto a page is such an unsatisfying exercise, particularly when you're meant to set an example with this paper you're writing besotten with a cold and confused head. Today coming back on the train the Hudson was all frozen choppy, almost solid on the edges and getting more loose towards the center. It reminded me of pastry crust, for some reason. Back to work. Modernity ick.

may i inquire as to the contents of your eschatological mix?

i just yesterday started putting together a transcendance/apocalypsey mix

[identity profile] starfrosting.livejournal.com 2007-02-06 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
well now that I've been caught in the act of listening to a mix I made for someone else (it was originally for Taylor, made while I was in Dublin), I may as well tell you some of what was on it. First lots of angel references, apocalyptic overtones, and a 'mercy, mercy me' subtitle. So, Meshell, CocoRosie (replete with their Rilke reference), a couple of Lauryn Hill songs about submission to g-d, Mirah, Loretta Lynn, lots of Patti Smith, an Andrew Bird song, A Silver Mt Zion, "One Beat," Al Green, and ended w/Johnny Cash singing "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)" because I thought it had vaguely anti-Semitic undertones but was resolutely relevant to the mix as a whole.

and what's on yrs, dear Bea who I've heard no news from in a while?

no "when the man comes around"?

seriously kid.

mine's sort of kind of being like "yay! look! the apocalypse!" in a farewell-to-the-flesh/transcendental-communion-with-life sort of way. and only in the very early stages.

what i got so far (subject to radical overhaul)
we are here to change the world - michael jackson (singing as captain eo)
lift me up - moby
on the radio - regina spektor
it's only the end of the world - black box recorder
sing - dresden dolls
human after all - daft punk
wine - saul williams
utopia - alanis morissette
preparedness - bird & bee
hassan's mimuna - balkan beatbox
big time sensuality - bjork

i'll tell you about my life when i get back from long island. promise.

Listening to the apocalypse?

[identity profile] starfrosting.livejournal.com 2007-02-06 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
my own heavy-on-the-angels, not-so-scary version, yes.

Dear Oli,

This has absolutely nothing to do with this entry, but you should call me because I need some advice on being on the other (non-wielding) end of a cane. Because lord knows I am no good at folding laundry. Also, I miss you in general and demand that you come to my birthday party (second weekend of Vassar Spring Break) if you are at all in PA...and even if you are not!

Love,

Me

P.S. Why oh why am I taking time off from the Academy?

[identity profile] starfrosting.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well the mere idea of canes scares the shit out of me, but I'd love to give you a pep talk about other things. I'll call you later tonight, okay?
x,
me

ps- I have no idea.
