Can we all just say some prayers for the crescent city?

And, as Seth pointed out, why weren't the 1000 civilian deaths in Baghdad on the front page?

I just don't even know what to say. There is so much tragic loss of life right now that I just don't know what to say.

And here I am, listening to Thelonious, so fucking excited to crack my new philosophy books. I just don't even know.

Because the death toll from Katrina may hit 60,000+ dead. Because that's right in our yard. Because we all know people there. Because it's human nature to care more about people you know than people you don't.

Besides, it was on the front page of my local paper, below the fold.

Fair enough. I certainly didn't mean to belittle the absolute horror that's going on for people here.

I was wondering that about baghdad too, of course it's on the front page of the BBC website. US News is so weird.

Weird is one word for it.

Baghdad did make the front page of the Boston Globe, for what that's worth. Below the Katrina news of course.

What a terrible day. And what an understatement that is.

But you've got to keep living your life, philosophy books and all. There's no other way to do it...

I agree completely.

What've you been up to?

Living in Boston, working as a secretary, applying to law school... Nothing madly exciting (well, I'm excited about law school).

I hope your semester is starting well.

When will you hear word on your applications? That is exciting.

And yknow, despite all this (the mess in the world, the mess in my room), I think it is starting well. I'm taking a philosophy seminar on capitalism---how bad could it be? ;)

I'll send in my applications in a month or so, depending on when I get my recommendation letters in. I'll hear back anytime between November and next April, so it's likely to be a nerve wracking winter.

A phil seminar on capitalism... I'm so jealous. That sounds great.

It's funny because that's all I could really say to your post, "I feel that."

We should eat dinner together or something, before school gets too crazy.
