can we talk about the politics of this dude making Hasidic reggae sometime? I'm conflicted.

like with my haircut. I kinda like it. I mean, it has potential. But it's a little bit...I don't know, .

Plus it's the kind of haircut that makes me think, "I need facial hair." I guess at this point there's nary a haircut that doesn't make me think that, but whatevs.

Also I think I may have gotten my music back, but lost my playlists. I know you all were as upset about this as I am. But it felt like I'd lost a body part, for true.

(Who says "for true," and why did I just use it?)

and Matisyahu is on a label called J-Dub records, a specifically jewish label (with a few palestinian artists)which actually has some kick ass politics. check out their website sometime and some of the music on there. theres one group called Balkan Beat Box which i have fallen in love with.

Yeah but it was after I mentioned something about how my brother had bulked up at some point- my imitation being, "I am a man" in a fake low voice. It was sort of brilliant but quickly skimmed over.

I think what gets me most about the white Jewish Chasidic guy making reggae is the fake "Jamaican" accent he affects on at least some of his songs. I mean, whatever argument can be made for reggae being a good medium for his Chasidic-based spirituality (and I need to be honest and say that I'm not sure what that argument would be), the accent is just way way disrespectful, imo.

1. that's kind of where I'm at. like, on some level it makes sense to me that reggae as a spiritual medium would be (appropriated? extended?) by this american Hasid, since so much of reggae was generated out of Rastafarianism. but uh, so much of Rastafarianism and ergo reggae came out of Panafricanism. so. plus the accent.
