Can I just tell you how happy this made me?
Today in Women's Studies we went over Dean Spade's article about mutilating gender and the medical regulation of gender identity, as well as that movie Southern Comfort about a southern transman.
So anyway, we were discussing all sorts of things like passing, legibility, and punitive enforcement of norms (some of the discussion was painful, it's true, like when that girl kept calling the transwoman in the film 'he') and RK and I sorta started talking at the same time. Since we sit next to each other I couldn't tell who was being called on to speak, so I told RK to go ahead. Jami looked at me and said, "Ladies first," and it was so ridiculously perfect---like, way to pick up on the gender dynamic between me and RK! Sigh. How can I be overwhelmed and stressed with this beautiful affirmation of wit and genderqueerness?
